The Pinnacles desert of Nambung National Park is one of the major natural attractions and most visited in Western Australia.
Located around 200kms north of Perth, it takes roughly a 2 hours’ drive to reach the destination. The desert covers an area of 17,487 hectares providing natural habitat for native animals. If lucky, you can spot a Kangaroo too!
We started from Perth towards north along Wanneroo Road taking a turn into Indian Ocean Drive. It takes roughly 2 hours but with kids we took a break in between at Seabird Tavern. It has a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean accompanied with great food. After a short refreshing break we headed straight towards the Pinnacles.
Nambung National Park is accessible by both four-wheeler and two-wheelers. At the entrance of the park there will be fee of $15.00 per private vehicle, carrying up to 12 occupants. You can then drive into the desert to witness the natural wonder.
The Pinnacles are stunning natural limestone structures, formed approximately 30,000 years ago after the sea receded and left deposits of sea shells. With time the coastal winds removed the surrounding sand, leaving the pillars visible all over the area. It is better to park your vehicle and take a walk around the pillars. You will find rocks of different shapes and sizes. Climb up to the small hill tops for a breath-taking view of the natural landscape.
The best time to visit this place is between August to October. There are no accommodations available within Nambung National Park but lodging and camping areas can be found in Cervantes.
On our return drive we took a break at the Lancelin beach where we captured the sunset, splashed on the waves, grabbed some icecream and headed towards home.
You can also include Yanchep National Park and Moore River which are nearby tourist attractions and can be covered in a day. You could extend the drive out a little more to Jurien Bay, The Maze, Lake Thetis and Hangover Bay.
We later realized it was World Tourism Day when we were soaking in the Pinnacles sun. I must say a day well spent.
