What will you do if you have a severe chronic backache? I am sure you will try to seek every possible medical help. But if you still don’t find a cure, then? I am sure making plans and going on a travel adventure would be the last thing on your mind. Well! Carlo Pizzati’s ‘Bending Over Backwards’ is just about that.

Book Review

The cover page of the book is nicely done in sync with the adventurous travels of the author and humorous undertone of the book.

The main plot revolves around how the author undertakes various measures to cure his twenty-year-old severe backache. After exhausting every medical technique, he opts for something very unusual. He embarks on an adventurous journey from a posturologist’s office in northern Italy to the refined mountain air of Boulder to seek a variety of New Age alternative cures; from a trance-dance venue hidden near the woods of Cinque Terre to an exorcist-shaman’s den near Buenos Aires, who photographs demons and auras.

Carlo finally settles in India at the Ashtanga Yoga Centre in Mysore to live and learn from Yogis. He imbibes the strictly disciplined life of the yogis and in the process re-discovers himself and many facets of his present and past lives. It completely changes his life.

The book is laced with humour even at the grimmest of situations, that is what makes it readable. Although, the pace of the book could have a bit better. He smartly tries to mix technology with spirituality. I appreciate the simplicity with which he tries to put forth something as tricky and complex as spirituality.

Whether Carlos eventually finds a cure for his backache through this roller-coaster ride of travel, technology, spirituality and self-awakening, you will have to grab a copy of the book. Sometime in the hustle and bustle of life, we forget the simpler things. We are busy chasing so many things at the cost of inner peace, health and solace that in the end, we end up questioning, was it all worth it?

Bending over backwards from Carlo Pizzati is a decent self-help book. If you are someone looking to explore the genre and want to start with something light, then I must definitely recommend this book.
