About the author – Apeksha Rao is the author of India’s first YA spy series, The Spyders. Her debut novel, Along Came A Spyder, has been optioned for screen adaptation. She’s currently working on a historical thriller. Apeksha is part of Anita Nair’s mentorship program. She lives in Bangalore.

This book has an equal balance of both thriller and humour. I picked up a spy thriller mystery after a long time. I remember reading them in my childhood and loved them to the core. I was glad to see that I still enjoy this genre and might pick up a few more soon.

Samira Joshi is 17 years old and has only one dream that is to be a spy. Her parents are intelligence agents for RAW but they expect their only daughter to become a doctor. When Samira sees a college friend being trapped by a pimp, she makes it a mission for herself to save her friend. In the course she discovers the existence of a secret sisterhood of teen spies — The Spyders!

Since her childhood she has seen a lot of missions and conspiracies and always aimed to be a spy. When she grew up her parents wanted her to choose a safe career despite all her capabilities to become a spy.

The protagonist is shown to live an unconventional life, is courageous and witty. The book is thrilling, entertaining and will take you through a lot of spy missions and hidden communications as you witness the dark side of the world. Spyders is a teenage spy organization run by Col Singh. The Spyders receive rigorous training to handle difficult situations. Samira discovers that she was Col Singh’s first choice to join the Spyders. The Spyders carry on their undercover work, from busting prostitution rings to terror attacks.

Samira’s character is drawn very well which shows every teenager’s confidence and insecurities. The language used is very relatable. Other characters also play an important role like Tina, Millie, Debbie, Mila, Evelyne and together they are a part of lot of adventure that makes this book an interesting read.

The book has a lots of twists and turns and will keep you engrossed till the end. I loved the plotting and the character sketches. It’s a fast-paced read which can be enjoyed by readers of all ages and not just young adults. Samira is here to inspire many young girls to follow their dreams.

Will Samira be able to prove herself to the team of Spyders and Col Singh? Will she be able to convince her parents about her dream? How do they solve the mysteries? Read Along came a Spyder and find it out yourself.
