K – Kanya

(Story shared by Shubhalaxmi Dabhowale)

“Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh”, located in Ahmedabad, takes care of nearly 200 visually impaired girls. It offers lodging, boarding and education through Braille facility. It also has a Braille library for the students. Apart from education, the girls are taught music, health and hygiene. They are taken out for picnics, overnight trips, circus, parks and temples.

Their main objective is to educate the girls so that they can lead an independent life. They also teach them basic cooking, home management and enrol them in vocational courses that help them get a job.

When the girls attain a marriageable age, they find suitable match for them and organize weddings at the institute premises. As a wedding gift they help them set up their new home which is arranged by generous donors.

Our today’s smilegifter has been a volunteer for many years. She visits them regularly and provides honorary service by reading out their books, writing their exams (the students are assigned a writer who writes what they dictate) and helping them in their education. You too can help them in their noble cause by donating. Their details are given in this link http://www.akpgschool.org/ We appreciate their efforts and wish them good luck.

  1. I used to visit one such aashram for homeless girls in Mysore. There was no common mode of communication but yet the smiles on their faces says it all when we visit and help them out.
    Keep spreading the goodness Rashi.

  2. Wow! This is doing a great job! I felt that all the unpaired people have some special power and connection. They know how to handle odds with their smiles.
