H – Helmet Please

(Story by Dwijesh Bhatt)

On a December evening, while returning from office, Dwijesh had an experience that he can never forget. He was on his bike, heavily loaded with a winter jacket, laptop bag, gloves and a helmet. He personally doesn’t like wearing a helmet but he was forced to wear one because his office has strict rules.

As soon as the traffic halted, he immediately removed his helmet and fixed it to the holder in his bike. As he started riding, he heard a lady’s voice call him from behind. He ignored and moved on but that lady didn’t stop. She continued to call him, beep and followed him for around a kilometre’s distance.

As the traffic slowed down again, he stopped to look back. The lady was riding her scooter along with a child sitting pillion, maybe her daughter and both were wearing helmets. She politely requested him to wear his helmet as there is heavy traffic and he shouldn’t take a risk.

He was completely shaken that how a stranger was concerned about his life but he himself was not. He wanted to thank her when he realized it but by then she was gone.

He has now pledged to always wear his helmet and shared this incident to make others also realize the importance of it. We thank the lady for spreading this awareness and we can also see that her efforts are paying off. We need more people like her to spread goodness.

  1. It was nice of the lady to give unsolicited advice. It was polite of Dwijesh to no snap and ask her to mind her business. Good that better sense prevailed, and Dwijesh was convinced that he should wear helmet. It is essential. Someone is waiting for every bike rider at home.

  2. Certain messages by strangers stay with you forever especially when they are given selflessly and with good intentions. I do have a couple of them engraved in my heart too. However, the readiness to listen to these messages from the Universe is something that decides how well we hear, accept and bring in the change.
A great post and respect for the lady & Dwijesh equaly for honouring the concern.

  3. Often if we try to do this, the strangers snap back stating mind your own business. While kudos for the stranger and her concern, hats off to our hero for letting better sense prevail over him.

  4. You know I have heard stories about some people file PIL’s against the rule for wearing helmets as it does not allow wimen to adorn their hair with flowers! It is indeed heart warming that someone has the sense to warn people about how unsafe riding without a helmet is.

  5. Our traffic sense is so poor…and flout so many rules on a regular basis. So awesome of you creating awareness while spreading goodness and speaking of indian traffic…sitting in perth 😀
